We’re currently working on our project Orchestra of Samples, a long-term all encompassing sampling extravaganza, featuring recorded musicians from around the world, from Mexico to Senegal, Brazil to France. Sampling ‘sans frontières’ you might say!
Day one in Israel and we found ourselves on a rooftop in 40 degrees heat and no shade! We were in Tel Aviv playing at the opening of the ICON film festival who's organisers had arranged this great location over-looking old Jaffa and the port, the perfect place to get tanned, or rather sun-burnt, as well as film a group of very talented musicians !
We first met instrumental vocalist Nir Yaniv with Uri Aviv, director of ICON, at one of our gigs in London. A devoted acapella performer, Nir samples his voice, creating loops and layering one sample on top of another, but - as Nir's always keen to point out - he's not a beat-boxer, explaining that if a beat-boxer is the percussion, then he's 'the rest of the band'. Nir's also a writer, actor and film-maker and this year made the short film 'Conspiracy'.
That day we also recorded with amazing flautist Aram Drevekenin and the fantastic Russian violinist Ira Bareli, who plays with the folk band Crinatura. Then lastly, as the sun was on it's way down, we filmed Israeli singer and guitarist Tal Segev - who improvised a catchy little tune with which we helped add some lyrics! Gonna be great remixing that...
Huge thanks to Boaz Pesenzon, Inbal Maoz, Boris Levit and Uri Aviv for making the day happen. Both Nir and Ira had to shoot off before we finished filming, so sadly weren't in the group photo!
