Mixmasters is the genre defining project from DVD label and AV artists Addictive TV.

Fusing electronic music and the moving image, Mixmasters brings together some of the most innovative DJs, VJs, audiovisual artists, music producers and motion graphics artists from around the world to create a stunning collection of audiovisual mixes.

ARTIST BIOGS

LE HAMMOND INFERNO

Le Hammond Inferno are the Berlin based composer-DJ-duo heads of Germany’s Bungalow Records. The label has released artists such as Mina, Maxwell Implosion, Stereo Total and a number of Japanese artists including Fantastic Plastic Machine. Their own album “My First Political Dance Album” is a mix of groovy beats and strange and dangerous sounds. The duo have also remixed Saint Etienne, Pizzicato Five, Andreas Dorau and Herbert Grönemeyer.

GIRAFFENTOAST

Hamburg-based VJs, graphic artists and web designers, Giraffentoast are one of the leading VJ teams in Germany.  They've played at The Berlin Love Parade, created visuals for the likes of Levis and Smirnoff and recently won a Best VJ Award at Germany’s famed Bochumer Video Festival. Their crafted and slick visuals have a fun feel to them.

SPACER

Spacer, aka Luke Gordon, recorded this mix on Howie B’s Pussyfoot label. He’s a man who’s been working at the pointy end of the ‘Music With No Name’ genre since the early 90’s, having made his mark with two classic chilled electronica albums ‘Atlas Earth’ and ‘Sensory Man’ and a host of 12" releases. Spacer also played a pivotal role at the notorious Milo Studios, engineering for artists including DJ Krush, Major Force, U.N.K.L.E. and most importantly top producer/DJ Howie B.

ADDICTIVE TV

Addictive TV are the London based group of artists, DJs, VJs and television producers who, back in 1999, set up what is acknowledged as the world’s first VJ-focused DVD label.  Addictive TV have performed in Japan, North America and across Europe, from the Pompidou Centre to Tokyo superclub Ageha, and from Resfest to the Glastonbury Festival. As VJs, they’ve mixed visuals for artists such as Howie B, Miss Kittin, 808 State and Fatboy Slim and have created many recorded AV works fusing visuals and music, which have been exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, La Cite de la Musique in Paris and the Moving Image Centre in New Zealand and at many international festivals including Villette Numerique, Midem and Sonar.

EU

Formed in 1997, EU are electronica duo Sasha Zaitcev and Ilya Baramiya from Saint-Petersburg, Russia. They produce warm, enigmatic electronic grooves that have drawn attention from all over Europe, particualrly Britain, where they’ve released on both the Pause_2 label and Lo Recordings. Their single 'Wienn / Srez' was chosen ‘Single of the Week’ by the NME and was picked for radio play by the UK’s Radio 1 DJs John Peel and Mary Anne Hobbs. They remixed an exclusive ten minute version of their Wienn track for the Mixmasters project. Their album ‘EU_Soft’ was recently released on Russian label Art-tek Records.


RED DOG

Red Dog aka Ben Mason is one of the forerunners of the British club visual scene and over the last decade has pretty much played at all major festivals and venues in the UK. He began VJing at early Spiral Tribe parties which led to working with Cream, Back to Basics, Ministry of Sound, then Skint and later DJ Carl Cox.

THE MELLOWTRONS

The Mellowtrons are visual artist Giles Thacker and music producer Lee Walker.  Resident VJ and animator with Orbital, one of the UK's most established and best known electronic dance acts, Giles Thacker has been producing visuals and operating their live shows since the early 90's.  Producer and remixer Lee Walker specialises in dynamic multi-layered sound design and has previously worked with Autechre, Mike Flowers and Meat Beat Manifesto.  The pair have been collaborating for nearly a decade and are currently producing their debut DVD album for Addictive TV.

RED-OCHRE

Red-Ochre are Brian McClave and George Millward; the pair have been working together since the late 80's and are long time collaborators with Addictive TV, having worked on all their visual music projects.  McClave is a digital artist and photographer and has created work for DNA, Saatchi and the BBC's Shooting Live Artists project amongst many others; producing idents, title sequences and techno-art projects.  George Millward is the unusual mixture of well-respected scientist, leftfield ambient/techno producer and DJ; making a unique brand of poly-rhythmic cyber-chill, he draws on samples of reflected radio waves and natural sounds inspired by his work as an atmospheric physicist.  They are currently producing the Worlds first stereoscopic film of the Aurora Borealis.

JAMES GRAHAM

Having worked as a professional stills photographer and subsequently a television commercials director for 15 years, James Graham started experimenting with film and video on projects combining vision and sound. He has collaborated a number of years with Paris-based composer Pimpi Arroyo with whom he formed the audiovisual duo Spiral 3 and they released their first DVD album in 2003. He’s currently working on a installation involving a 12 camera set-up inside a volcano in Italy.

THE NEBULAE OF SOMETHING

The Nebulae of Something is guitarist Alejandro de Valera.  Originally from South America, he's been based in Paris now for over 20 years.  He’s a composer and musician who specialises in playing fretless guitar; one of only around a hundred in the world.  His debut album ‘Black and White Ultravision’, a collection electro-ambient work, was released in 2000.  He also creates sound designs for France’s RFI radio and is a long time collaborator with Addictive TV, and recently joined them for their new 2004 live audiovisual performance at the Pompidou Centre.

eMOVIE

Paris-based eMovie are a collective of graphic artists, web designers, VJs and DJs who’ve been around since 1998. They create illustrations, photographic work, interactive Flash animations, and other projects fusing visuals & sound. Their work has been shown at many festivals including Nemo, VideoEx, Exit, Mixmove and Videoformes, and in 2002, they won first prize at France's first Flash Film Festival. They are one of the leading VJ group in France and perform regularly in Paris clubs. They’re currently touring their new commissioned multimedia performance ‘Visiosonor’ in France and abroad.

LEONARD DE LEONARD

Multi-talented musician-producer-DJ Léonard de Léonard set up the very eclectic label Musiques Hybrides with Olaf Hund in 1999. The Paris-based label has released music from the likes of Norazia, Seep, and of course both Olaf Hund and Léonard de Léonard. His first album “Leonizer Fever” illustrates his multicultural style and ability to blend many musical genres. He’s also remixed a number of artists, composed music scores for films and video games and recently toured Europe as a DJ & sound designer for Philippe Decouflé’s dance show.

SHARE THE FANTASY & TOMOGRAPHER

TomoGrapher are a group of animators and VJs lead by Ken Sawamiya - the team members include Psymen, Shimamu, Zoe and Art Takeshiwho.  TomoGrapher have produced work for Sony, TDK and Japanese telecoms giant NTT DoCoMo.  They closely work with the techno group Share The Fantasy, especially for audiovisually recorded work.  One of the most pro-active VJ teams in Tokyo, Ken Sawamiya is also the man behind the VJ project Pixelcraft, who release the VJ software Pixplayer Lite (one of the simplest to use in the world).  He also releases compilations of copyright free visual material called 'Pixdiscs' and organises the Tokyo VJ nights called PIX, where VJs perform head-to-head hip-hop MC style.

PORKY

Porky is a head honcho of Pork Records, a label he set up back in 1990 in Hull, North of England. He’s released the likes of Fila Brazilia, Baby Mammoth, Beige and Momma Gravy. Porky and his artists work in relative isolation, away from the London hype, releasing and creating chilled leftfield electronica. They’ve adopted a do-it-yourself approach and manage to establish a cult following worldwide becoming Hull’s most raved about export.

TECHNOBABBLE

Jes Benstock, aka Technobabble, is a promo and short film director. He’s created visuals for bands and live shows including for both Orbital and Catatonia.
